Centre for Nursing Education (CNE)
CNE aims to support the learning needs of nurses and improve
patient care through the acquisition of knowledge, skills and
behaviours. CNE run an extensive number of post graduate
programs and opportunities for all nurses which articulate with
University higher degrees.
Undergraduate Clinical Programs
Charlies offers clinical placements to local, interstate and
international undergraduate nursing students for clinical
experience as an observer or participant. Annual student numbers
vary, with approximately 1500 clinical placements facilitated each
year. International and interstate places are limited with
availability during non peak times of the year.
Continuing Education Courses
The Centre for Nursing Education facilitates a broad range of
vocationally oriented continuing education courses to support the
learning needs of nurses and foster ongoing professional
development and clinical expertise.

Postgraduate Programs
The Centre for Nursing Education at Sir Charles Gairdner
Hospital offers a number of Postgraduate programs for nursing
staff. All programs articulate into degrees of higher
learning at Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and Murdoch
University within Western Australiaor are accredited with the WA
Training Accreditation Council. Opportunities for students to
enroll collaboratively with Edith Cowan University in a Master of
Clinical Nursing are available in the Postgraduate Cancer, Critical
Care, Emergency, Nephrology and Neuroscience Nursing Programs.
Graduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and
Control
This program is for Healthcare Professionals who have at least
two years clinical experience and would like to extend their
knowledge in this area. It is a competency based program and
will provide theoretical and practical methods to develop the
participants' skills in infection prevention and control.
This program is a collaborative project between the Centre for
Nurse Education at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Hands-on
Infection Control and is accredited as a Postgraduate Certificate
with the WA Training Accreditation Council.
The program commences in February each year and is conducted
over the academic year with a total of 96 hours direct contact time
during the year.

Postgraduate Cancer Nursing Program
This post registration program provides a formal qualification
for registered nurses enabling them to develop acute care nursing
knowledge and skills in the speciality field of cancer
nursing. The program provides registered nurses with an
understanding of the pathophysiology; treatment and nursing
management of cancer related conditions and enables them to develop
advanced skills in patient assessment, monitoring and delivery of
care to an acutely ill patient in this speciality setting.
Graduands demonstrate excellent clinical skills, underpinned by an
advanced knowledge base balanced with critical thinking skills and
an ethical approach to nursing.
The program commences in February with 64 hours direct contact
time during the year.

Postgraduate Critical Care Nursing Program
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, in collaboration with Fremantle
Hospital, Hollywood Private Hospital, The Mount Private Hospital
and Joondalup Health Campus offer a Postgraduate Critical Care
Nursing Program. This 54-week program commences in February of each
year and provides education and a formal qualification in critical
care nursing, focusing on intensive care nursing, with rotation to
coronary care. The program graduates nurses with highly
developed clinical abilities, underpinned by an advanced knowledge
base and balanced with critical thinking skills and an ethical
approach to nursing.
Registered nurses seeking admission to the program would
maximise their chances of selection by having 2 years postgraduate
experience and at least 6 months experience in a critical care or
High Dependency Unit area.

Postgraduate Emergency Nursing Program
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, in collaboration with Fremantle
Hospital, Rockingham Kwinana District Hospital, Joondalup Health
Campus, Swan Kalamunda Health Service and Peel Health campus offer
a Postgraduate Emergency Nursing Program. Clinical learning
is strongly supported by a postgraduate clinical education team,
including the program coordinator and a Staff Development Nurse
based in each of the participating Emergency Departments.
The 12-month program provides nurses with highly developed
clinical abilities in both adult and paediatric emergency nursing,
underpinned by an advanced knowledge base balanced with critical
thinking skills and an ethical approach to nursing.
This program commences in February of each year. Nurses
seeking admission to the program require 2 years postgraduate
experience with at least 6 months acute Emergency experience.
Postgraduate Nephrology Nursing Program
This distance education program provides a formal qualification
in Nephrology Nursing. The focus of the program is to develop
clinically competent skills that are underpinned by an advanced
theoretical base. The two-semester program has flexible options,
which allows the program to be completed over two years.
Participants may complete the required practical component at any
approved health centre, which provides nephrology services.
Registered nurses require one-year postgraduate experience and
six months nephrology specialty experience.

Postgraduate Neuroscience Nursing Program
This distance education program offers a world-class standard in
applied theory with flexible study options for Registered Nurses in
clinical neuroscience health services. Clinical development in
specialty competencies may be completed in an approved health
service. The program offers
- Graduate Certificate Neuroscience Nursing
- Certificate Neurosurgery or Neurology
- Postgraduate Studies in Multiple Sclerosis Nursing
Flexible entry to the program is offered in February and July.
Enrolment application is processed through the year.

Postgraduate Transition Nursing
Program
This
program is offered to registered nurses who are within
12-months of completion of a recognised Graduate
Nurse Program (GNP). This program develops confidence in
decision making, clinical judgment and augments clinical skills and
knowledge in the beginner registered nurse to enable them
to meet the challenges of contemporary health care
delivery. This 52 week program is a self-directed course of
study in collaboration with Edith Cowan University (ECU) with
3 full fee paying academic units completed onsite at
SCGH. The postgraduate transition
nursing program is a unique opportunity to advance the
registered nurse's professional career and fast track in
achieving a Masters award with ECU.
The program commences
in February and July each year.
